Local Government
Spending Spree
While Florida has one of the leanest state governments in the nation, the state's local governments are on a spending spree.
Florida has been a bastion of freedom, and our economy has reaped the benefits. Florida’s economy has been ranked number 1 in the nation by CNBC and U.S. News and World Report. The growing economy, 15th in the world if Florida was a standalone country, and tough on crime policies, makes it an attractive place to raise a family. Florida has seen property values across the state on the rise as people have flocked to the state. As property values rose, Floridians have seen their ad valorem taxes rise with them and they need relief.
Local governments have seen significant increases in their tax revenue collections since the pandemic, collecting approximately $35.56 billion in property tax revenue in 2019-20 with a current year (2025-26) projection to rake in $59.2 billion and in 2031-32 the projection north of $83.7 billion.
Florida's Save Our Homes proposal balances tax relief and ensuring local governments can fund essential services.
It does not defund local governments; it simply reigns in their spending and ensures essential services remain funded. In fact, based on the projections from the state’s economists, the proposal projects local governments will still collect more than they do in the 2025-26 fiscal year moving forward-all while providing relief to homeowners.
